WOODSTOCK AWARDED 2023 SCHMALZ CUP FINAL FOUR TOURNAMENT

The Schmalz Cup is the trophy presented annually to the PJHL (OHA JrC) Champions … Prior to last season (2021-22) the 8 division champions across the province played in the Schmalz Cup tournament quarterfinals (Conference finals), semifinals and finals – which were all Best-of-7 series … last season the PJHL initiated a Final Four Tournament that replaced the semifinals and finals best-of-7 series and would feature the 4 Conference finals winners … this was due in part to the Covid situation which affected the season … it allowed the league to schedule more regular season games for all teams but shortened the playoffs so it didn’t extend well into the summer … the tournament was held in Guelph at the University as it was central to all the teams in the province and provided area hotels/restaurants … it was chosen because it was best solution given a short time frame to arrange the tournament but it was the hope of the league that a similar suitable site could be found for this season among league members … the league chose Woodstock to be host of the tournament this season … so the division finals which are currently being played will decide 8 division winners advancing to the conference finals which remain a best-of-7 series … the Final Four teams (Conference champions) will then play a round-robin with each team having a home game in their own rink as well as an away game before all 4 teams descend on Woodstock for the whole weekend event with the final round-robin games on Friday night … the teams will then be seeded after the round-robin for the semifinals on Saturday (1 vs 4 , 2 vs 3) and of course the winners will meet on Sunday afternoon for the Schmalz Cup championship !!! … the site for next year’s tournament has not been chosen yet but if we can put on a good show there is no reason the tournament cannot be back again in the great city of Woodstock !!!
