Waking up with the Vets – Oct 30

This weekend contains two rounds of the annual Battle of 59 against the Norwich Merchants which kicked off last night here in Woodstock. The Vets came into the game looking to keep pace at the top of the tightly contested battle for the lead in the Doherty Division.

The Vets got off to an early start as Griffin Sinden opened the scoring midway through the first period followed by another Vets goal by Lakin Hendry who scored his first of the year just 4 minutes later. After leading 2-0 early on, the game took on a bit of a different tone as neither team held control of the game. Near the end of the third, Christian Pelley put the Vets up 3-0 before the Merchants got on the board a couple minutes prior to the first intermission. Furthermore, to complicate matters, goaltender Keaghan Brett was forced to leave the game after a netfront collision.

Grame Noye came out to start the second period with Brett still not being able to continue after the intermission. Ultimately, the second period was uneventful as we went into the second intermission still up 3-1.

The third period started off on the wrong foot as the Merchants drew back within 1 with an early powerplay marker from Norwich forward Kyle Brezinski. The merchant goal seemed to wake the Vets up a little bit as the tension crept into the complex. The pushback came about 4 minutes later as Kyle Baker found the back of the net following a Patrick Klazer point shot on the powerplay. From there, the Vets were able to hold off any further Merchant advances finishing the night with a 4-2 victory, adding 2 additional points to the Vets season tally.
